For this project we tore out the old, ugly, sunken retaining wall.

We replaced it with some County Tribute graphite colored block. We put in brand new base material, 3/4 inch limestone drainage rock.

This was a smaller retaining wall project, but no retaining wall is a DIY job if you want it to last. If you get the base, drainage, or material wrong it will eventually lean, sink, or fall over. Blaine has plenty of yards like the one above where the back of the house has a corner with a slope. To make matters worse, most yards in Blaine have really sandy soil, so these slopes erode quickly without something holding them back. A short wall like this one solves it permanently — it keeps water away from the foundation but drains properly without taking soil with it, and turns a problem corner into usable space that looks nice too!
