Retaining Walls – Garden Walls – Seat Walls in Andover

A lot of Andover properties have grade changes that cause real headaches — erosion, sloped yards that drain toward the foundation, elevation shifts that eat up usable outdoor space. A properly built retaining wall fixes those problems for good.

Boulder walls are our most-requested wall type in the North Metro, and Andover is no different. They’re almost always less expensive than block — sometimes by thousands of dollars — and nothing looks more natural on a residential property. For a cleaner, more structured look, we build with Versa-Lok, Keystone, and County block systems. Either way, every wall gets proper drainage behind it and the right base underneath it. We also tear out and rebuild failing walls — and we fix the actual cause, not just the part you can see.

For walls over 4 feet, we handle the engineering review and building permit process with the City of Andover. You don’t have to deal with any of that.

A Retaining Wall Project in Andover

Project Details

This Andover front yard had a grading problem — the slope was directing runoff straight toward the foundation. We pulled out all the old shrubs, hauled in 6 inches of fresh black dirt to re-grade the yard away from the house, and installed a new retaining wall using County tri-split block with bullet-style edging. Finished the landscape bed with hardwood shredded mulch and new shrubs. The drainage issue is permanently resolved.

Garden Wall & Seat Wall Projects in Andover

Not every wall needs to hold back a hillside. Garden walls and seat walls add definition and function to a yard — and they’re often the finishing detail that ties a patio or landscape renovation together. We build both using the same boulder, fieldstone, and block materials as our structural walls, so everything on the property looks like it belongs together.

The customer wanted more visual impact than standard edging would give him. We pulled out the old rotten wood edging and installed a garden wall using 4″ curved face tri-split block — taller and more defined than a typical edge, and built to last. He was thrilled with how much it changed the look of the whole bed.

Chilton stone garden wall project in Andover MN

Project Details

This project was right off Constance Blvd in Andover. The homeowner had a concrete pad poured outside his shed, but the pad sloped away from the shed and left an awkward step up into the garden bed. To create a clean transition, we sourced Chilton wall stone to match the existing Chilton edging already on the property — extending the original material rather than introducing something that didn’t belong. The result is seamless.

Project Details

This seat wall was built using Rockwood tumbled wall block in a 3-piece random pattern — decorative enough to look intentional, functional enough to handle daily use as seating. It defines the patio perimeter and eliminates the need for chairs around the fire pit area.

Patio Installations & Landscaping in Andover

Beyond walls, we do custom patios and a variety of landscape installations including landscape beds, sod, black dirt and seeding, decorative rock and mulch, shrub and perennial planting, edging, and drainage solutions.

For this project we installed 2″ river rock around the house and put in all the plantings. We also installed a beautiful paver patio in the backyard.

Why Andover Homeowners Choose Steve

There are two kinds of contractors in this market. The larger companies send a crew you’ve never met, and whoever gave you the estimate is long gone by the time the work starts. The smaller guys are often unreliable — they show up when it’s convenient, cut corners you won’t notice until a year later, and don’t have the equipment to do the job efficiently.

We’re neither. Steve personally walks every property for the estimate and is the foreman on every project from start to finish. What I bid is what gets built. I’ve been doing this since I was nine years old — started in Anoka in 1997, built every year since on repeat business and referrals, and now 90% of our customers are return clients or word-of-mouth. Most of them never bother getting a second bid.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a retaining wall cost in Andover, MN?
Most retaining walls run $60–$80 per square foot of wall face depending on material and site conditions. Boulder walls are often less expensive than block — sometimes by thousands of dollars — which surprises most homeowners. Unusual site conditions like clay pockets, buried stumps, or limited equipment access can affect cost. We’ll give you a specific number after the on-site assessment.
How much does a paver patio cost in Andover?
Most professional patio installations in the North Metro run $30–$50 per square foot. Our pricing typically falls in the $30–$40 range depending on patio size, paver selection, and site conditions. A smaller starter patio begins around $3,500. Larger patios are more cost-efficient per square foot — the equipment, delivery, and setup costs are the same whether the patio is 200 sq ft or 600. Call for a free estimate and we’ll give you a number specific to your property.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall or patio in Andover?
Patios generally don’t require a permit in Andover. Retaining walls over 4 feet require engineering review and a building permit — we handle that entire process as the contractor. Gas-fired fire features also require a permit, which we pull. You don’t have to manage any of it.
How does Andover’s sandy soil affect a patio or wall installation?
The sandy Anoka Sand Plain soils actually work in your favor for drainage — we don’t deal with the moisture retention and compaction problems common in clay-heavy soils. That said, proper base depth and compaction still matter. We excavate to the required depth, compact the subgrade, and use base materials that drain rapidly and pack hard: crushed limestone for patios, 3/4″ clear stone for retaining walls. The goal is a foundation that stays stable no matter how much water moves through it.
How long does an installation take?
A standard patio installation typically takes about 5 days start to finish. Most residential retaining wall projects run one day to under a week depending on wall length, height, and material. We’ll give you a realistic timeline when we assess the project on-site.
Will you damage my lawn or driveway during the install?
We take property protection seriously. We use specialized wheeled equipment designed for golf courses that carries heavy material across your yard with virtually no turf damage. We lay plywood when needed and move it throughout the project to prevent prolonged pressure on any one area. We need about 6 feet of clearance to access a backyard — if a fence section needs to come down temporarily, we handle that and put it back before we leave.
Where can I see paver and wall block options before I decide?
We source from Rock Hard Landscape Supply in Andover and Plaisted’s in Elk River — both have showrooms where you can see and touch the actual pavers and wall block before committing. We can also send product recommendations and project photos by email. Manufacturers like Willow Creek, Belgard, Unilock, and Versa-Lok all have full product galleries on their websites as well.

"Steve removed our old landscaping in front of the house and replaced it with a new retaining wall, plantings, and mulch. He also re-sodded several areas where the grass had died out. Fair pricing, quality work, and did the work when he said he would. I highly recommend him." -Bryce Adams
